Elite Survey Troops Take Osaka by Storm

With frontman Nimo (ex-ACE) affectionately known as a god of rain, it seemed predictable that the day of Dai 104-ki Kunren Heidan’s first one-man live Get over the wall would bring wet weather. Hopefully, the typhoon magnitude was unintentional but, nonetheless, many gathered at Osaka JACK LION on October 5 for a promising cover live from the band that included guitarist Toki of BLACK GENE FOR THE NEXT SCENE, guitarist TOMO (formerly of FEST VAINQUEUR), bassist Kenta, and NINJAMAN JAPAN’s Dewey on drums. Local Kansai visual kei band DixdriveR played as the opening act to ramp up the energy with a short set before the mock soldiers took the stage.

As the infamous theme song “Guren no Yumiya” played, each member stepped out onstage in costumes from the manga and anime Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan, saluting the crowd before taking up their respective instruments. The set was filled with well-known visual kei songs such as Acid Black Cherry’s “SPELL MAGIC” and T.M. Revolution’s “HEART OF SWORD ~Yoake mae~,” which every band member performed with the same energy as if the songs were their original creations. Nimo encouraged the crowd to follow along with some playful choreography as both TOMO and Toki added their voices to the choruses, as well as gestures for those closest to the front to come forward. Although the least known of the five, bassist Kenta was no less game for putting his best efforts forward in keeping the rhythm alongside a serious-faced Dewey.

The encore started with a Japanese pop classic from boy band KAT-TUN in the form of “Real Face,” to the great amusement of the crowd. The fact that a few of the members had to rely on lyric cheat sheets during the number in combination with the improvised choreography left a few audience members in giggles. The rest of the encore continued with a few more Acid Black Cherry numbers before wrapping up.

With their first oneman behind them, it will be interesting to see what the members have in store for their fans, within the circles of their regular bands or as the novelty act, Dai 104-ki kunren heidan. Any future project is sure to be enjoyable with such a talented bunch so make sure to keep your eyes and ears out for coming announcements.

Chi’s interest in visual kei stems from her love of art. The unique aesthetics in combination with the wide range of musical styles within the genre have been what has kept her interest in the visual kei scene for over a decade. The main image her friends and classmates have of her is with a camera in hand, face behind the viewfinder or screen. This image is also occasionally combined with memories of running around her to avoid getting into her panorama shots.
